Things Leaders Should Never Do

This is meant to be an evergreen list of things that leaders should never do, hopefully I don't need to add many to this list!

  • Schedule unprompted meetings with no context
    • For sensitive things related to another meeting yet to happen - just wait to schedule the meeting
    • For all other cases, always provide context!
  • Send copy-pasted messages as a DM
    • I can tell when the message wasn't written just for me
    • If you intend to share it with all your directs, then post it in a shared channel!
  • Answer questions about the team, without talking to the team first
    • Don't provide estimates for a project without talking to the team working on it directly first
    • Don't say the team is doing well without asking how the team is doing first
  • Ask for status updates at 5pm on a Friday
    • If the team is in a crunch period, communicate early and similarly ask for updates earlier
    • Nothing is ever so critical that it needs to be responded to at 5pm on a Friday - save it for Monday morning

Low/no process workflow wasn't actually no process, it was only an "invisible" process. An implicit contract with everyone on the team to do that async workflow on their own time.
