In April of this year I finally opted to move away from my Apple magic keyboard to a proper mechanical keyboard and opted to jump to the Nuphy Air75 V2. That upgrade was pretty decent - I had tried mechanical keyboards before (mainly with the logitech mx keyboard) and they didn't really stick for long because the keyboard was quite loud and also I found it a bit difficult for my wrists to adjust to the increased keyboard height compared to the magic keyboard.

However the Nuphy for some reason stuck around for a bit and felt pretty good to use daily as my go-to keyboard when at my desk.

So when the V3 of the same keyboard was announced, I was slightly intrigued. One could argue that I probably bought the V2 at the wrong time because the V3 came out only a couple of months after I got the original one.

One of the key aspects that had convinced me to upgrade to the V3 version was that it had seemed that the new model was going to be quite a bit slimmer than the V2 version - while I don't really care much about the size I wanted to get something that was a bit slimmer / not as tall to make it just a bit easier to type on and get closer to the nice experience that I had with my magic keyboard.

However, when I actually got my V3 keyboard, I found out the hard way that it was in fact actually taller than the V2 version of the keyboard.

Note: I primarily use the keyboards without extending the back "feet" on the keyboards - as I find that the angle from where I rest my wrists - yes I know I shouldn't be resting them in the first place - the non-extended version is already almost at an angle that is not too easy to use.

The height of the keyboard unfortunately isn't one of the only issues that I've had with the new version since using it for a few months now, the other issues have been:

Extremely slow re-connection times

I'll often step away from my computer for a minute or two - and I keep the keyboard on for that time, however even after disabling the auto-sleep functionality (I think?!), when I come back to my computer it takes a solid 2 or 3 minutes before the keyboard is on, re-connected to my computer, and usable!

I never had this issue with the V2 version of the keyboard oddly...

Flaky connections / disconnections

Similar to the slow re-connection times, the new version of the keyboard somehow disconnects every once in a while and I need to end up re-pairing it with my computer - I now have like 6 different recognized keyboard devices in my bluetooth settings because of this random disconnect issue.

Again, I never had this issue with the V2 version of the keyboard either

macOS Continuity Disconnects

I often use both my work laptop and my personal laptop next to one another and I enjoy being able to use my trackpad and keyboard across both devices seamlessly!

However, for some reason every so often the keyboard randomly disconnects and not only does it randomly disconnect but it also seems to disconnect my trackpad as well!

The only fix I've found for this is turning off both the keyboard and the trackpad, and then turning them back on and re-connecting them to the primary computer.

Again, I never had this issue with the V2 version of the keyboard either...

Overall, this new version of the keyboard has been an entire downgrade for me personally. I've moved back over to the V2 of the keyboard and have nicely avoided a lot of the above pain points!

I do miss a few things since moving back to the v2 of the keyboard:

  • I chose slightly better (mainly in the sound) switches when I ordered the v3 version
    • Maybe I can swap the switches over to my v2 keyboard? Something to investigate soon!
  • The dial replacement for the delete key
    • I found this so nice to use for volume adjustment, but I honestly still didn't really use it that much anyway

Anyway - I think thats enough of me ranting about my keyboards, I'm curious to hear from others that may have also bought the air V3 and if so what their experience has been! Do I just have a bad instance of the keyboard and I should get a replacement?

I quickly wrote about my very rough experience with the Nuphy Air75 V3 keyboard, and have since moved back to the V2 version!

I recently changed out my keyboard for daily use from the Nuphy Air75 V2 to the V3 model - and i've had a mixed experience in that change that I figured I should share more broadly.
