Another year in the books since my last birthday post, and somehow this one felt even faster than the last!

This last year I got married (just a month ago now!), while I barely did anything to help prepare for it (huge shoutout to my now wife for effectively working three jobs to design and plan out everything for us), its nice now not needing to plan for it.

Recap:

As always, I want to revisit the goals I set for myself in last year's post:

  • Health
  • Write more

Health 🫤

My health over the past year was best looked at as a story of three parts, the first third over the last year was pretty decent. I had started some of my health habits just before my last birthday and was really walking a ton and also tracking my calories a bit better.

The middle third of the year was winter and I fell off on my morning walks, but I was still intermittently tracking my calories.

The final third was a mixed bag - I slowly stopped tracking my calories and also wasn't really getting out for my morning walks anymore either. I tried to mix in some walking here and there but it wasn't to the same extent as before.

This year I pulled together my steps and weight data going back five years - each line below is one "birthday year" (August through July), with the past year highlighted.

A line chart plotting my steps per day (7 day average) across each of the past four birthday years, with the most recent year highlighted in green.

Read and Write more

I failed quite hard on both of these resolutions over the last year. I fell into a bit of a rut in terms of reading and couldn't find a book that was holding my attention for long enough.

Additionally on the writing front, work and also some of the planning/tasks for the wedding cut into my free time a bit (as well as Arc Raiders and Battlefield 6).

Goals:

This year I'm doing something different: instead of a handful of goals, I'm setting one primary resolution.

Health

If you've read my past few birthday posts, this will look familiar - health has been a recurring resolution for three years running. And each year the same pattern plays out: I dedicate a solid stretch of effort - usually starting in the summer or end of spring - and then give up somewhere in the winter.

Looking at the charts above, you can literally see the pattern - the effort ramps up, then the cold sets in and the lines flatten out.

So this year the goal isn't "get healthier", it's to break that cycle: build habits that survive the winter, and turn health into a life-long habit instead of a 4-month-long one.

Here's to another year!
